Why Your Aircon Might Need a Gas Top-Up

Refrigerant gas is the lifeblood of your aircon system. It absorbs heat from indoor air and transfers it outside, creating the cooling effect. When gas levels drop below the manufacturer’s specification, your aircon struggles to cool - running longer, working harder, and consuming more electricity without delivering the comfort you expect.

In a properly sealed system with regular aircon servicing, refrigerant should not need topping up. If your aircon is losing gas, there is almost certainly a leak that needs to be found and fixed. At Billy Aircon, we always check for leaks before topping up - because simply adding gas without fixing the leak means you will be paying for the same service again in a few months.

Signs Your Aircon Gas Is Low

Watch for these symptoms of low refrigerant:

  • Aircon running but not cold - The most common sign. The unit blows air, but it is not cool enough.
  • Ice forming on the indoor unit - Low gas causes the evaporator coil temperature to drop below freezing, forming ice.
  • Compressor running continuously - The system cannot reach the set temperature, so the compressor never cycles off.
  • Higher electricity bills - The unit works harder and longer to compensate for low gas, using more power.
  • Hissing or bubbling sounds - This may indicate a gas leak at a piping joint.

If you notice any of these signs, contact us on WhatsApp for a diagnostic check.

Our Gas Top-Up Pricing

Refrigerant TypePrice RangeCommon In
R22S$50–$80Older systems (pre-2015)
R410AS$60–$150Most current systems
R32 (Licensed)S$80–$200Newer inverter units

Price depends on the amount of gas needed. We measure the exact deficit and charge accordingly - no flat rate that overcharges for a small top-up.

Understanding Refrigerant Types

R22 (Freon)

An older refrigerant being phased out globally due to ozone depletion concerns. Still found in many aircon systems installed before 2015. We carry R22 for maintenance of existing systems, but recommend upgrading to R410A or R32 units when possible.

R410A

The current standard for most residential and light commercial systems. R410A does not deplete the ozone layer and operates at higher pressure, providing better cooling efficiency. Most aircons sold in Singapore today use R410A.

R32

The newest generation refrigerant, used in the latest inverter models from brands like Daikin, Panasonic, and Mitsubishi. R32 has a lower global warming potential than R410A and is more energy-efficient. It is mildly flammable, which is why handling requires licensed technicians.

Our Gas Top-Up Process

  1. Pressure measurement - We connect a gauge manifold to your outdoor unit and read the current gas pressure.
  2. Comparison to specs - We check the pressure against the manufacturer’s recommended range for your specific model.
  3. Leak check - If gas is significantly low, we perform electronic leak detection on all joints, valves, and piping connections.
  4. Leak repair - If a leak is found, we repair it before adding gas. This prevents recurring low gas issues.
  5. Gas charge - We add the correct refrigerant type to bring the system to the manufacturer’s specified level.
  6. Performance test - We verify the aircon is cooling properly and the pressure is stable before leaving.

Why Leak Detection Matters

Many aircon companies simply top up the gas and leave - knowing you will call them again in a few months when the gas leaks out. At Billy Aircon, we believe in fixing the root cause:

  • Saves you money - Fixing a $30 leak now prevents three or four $80+ gas top-ups over the next year.
  • Protects your compressor - Running on low gas puts stress on the compressor, which is the most expensive component to replace.
  • Better for the environment - Refrigerant leaks contribute to global warming. Sealing leaks is the responsible approach.

How Our Gas Top-Up Process Works

1

Pressure Test

We connect a gauge manifold to your outdoor unit and measure the current refrigerant pressure against the manufacturer's specifications.

2

Leak Detection

If gas levels are significantly low, we perform electronic leak detection on all joints and connections to identify and fix the source before topping up.

3

Gas Top-Up

We charge the correct refrigerant type (R22, R410A, or R32) to the precise level recommended by the manufacturer. Your aircon cools like new.

Why Choose Billy Aircon for Gas Top-Up

All Gas Types

We carry R22, R410A, and R32 refrigerant - covering older and newer aircon systems. Our technicians know the correct charge for every model.

Leak Detection First

We do not just top up and leave. If gas is low, we check for leaks first - fixing the root cause prevents you from paying for gas top-ups repeatedly.

Gas Top-Up FAQ

Common signs include reduced cooling, the unit blowing warm air, ice forming on the evaporator coil, or the compressor running continuously without reaching the set temperature.

A properly installed and maintained aircon should not lose gas. If your unit needs frequent top-ups, there is likely a leak in the piping or connections that needs to be repaired.

R22 is an older refrigerant being phased out. R410A is the current standard for most systems. R32 is the newest, more energy-efficient option used in newer inverter units. The type depends on your unit's specifications.

No. Mixing refrigerant types can damage your compressor and void your warranty. We always use the correct type specified by the manufacturer.

A straightforward gas top-up takes about 30-45 minutes. If leak detection and repair are needed, it may take 1-2 hours.
