Why Your Aircon Might Need a Gas Top-Up

Refrigerant gas is the lifeblood of your aircon system. It absorbs heat from indoor air and transfers it outside, creating the cooling effect. When gas levels drop below the manufacturer’s specification, your aircon struggles to cool - running longer, working harder, and consuming more electricity without delivering the comfort you expect.

In a properly sealed system with regular aircon servicing, refrigerant should not need topping up. If your aircon is losing gas, there is almost certainly a leak that needs to be found and fixed. Signs Your Aircon Gas Is Low

• Aircon running but not cold - The most common sign. The unit blows air, but it is not cool enough.
• Ice forming on the indoor unit - Low gas causes the evaporator coil temperature to drop below freezing, forming ice.
• Compressor running continuously - The system cannot reach the set temperature, so the compressor never cycles off.
• Higher electricity bills - The unit works harder and longer to compensate for low gas, using more power.
• Hissing or bubbling sounds - This may indicate a gas leak at a piping joint.

Understanding Refrigerant Types

R22 (Freon)

An older refrigerant being phased out globally due to ozone depletion concerns. Still found in many aircon systems installed before 2015. We carry R22 for maintenance of existing systems, but recommend upgrading to R410A or R32 units when possible.

R410A

The current standard for most residential and light commercial systems. R410A does not deplete the ozone layer and operates at higher pressure, providing better cooling efficiency. Most aircons sold in Singapore today use R410A.

R32

The newest generation refrigerant, used in the latest inverter models from brands like Daikin, Panasonic, and Mitsubishi. R32 has a lower global warming potential than R410A and is more energy-efficient. It is mildly flammable, which is why handling requires licensed technicians.

1. Pressure measurement - We connect a gauge manifold to your outdoor unit and read the current gas pressure.
2. Comparison to specs - We check the pressure against the manufacturer’s recommended range for your specific model.
3. Leak check - If gas is significantly low, we perform electronic leak detection on all joints, valves, and piping connections.
4. Leak repair - If a leak is found, we repair it before adding gas. This prevents recurring low gas issues.
5. Gas charge - We add the correct refrigerant type to bring the system to the manufacturer’s specified level.
6. Performance test - We verify the aircon is cooling properly and the pressure is stable before leaving.
